On a whim, during my lunch break, I searched (with bing!) for "star trek sucked" and discovered the post Star Trek Sucked from Errata Security. What a relief to discover I'm not the only Star Trek fan who was thoroughly disappointed with this film.
Don't get me wrong, I'm not a star trek fanboy, and I would almost not really consider myself a "trekkie". I don't have locks of shatner's hair in my wallet; I just really enjoy the franchise, both the various series (TNG being the best OF COURSE) and films.
Me and my wife started watching TNG a while back, then moved to DS9 and now we're currently finishing Voyager and anticipating Enterprise (and eventually, the original series and films). One thing that has always impressed me about the Star Trek universe is that the ENTIRE RUN, from the original series in the 60s all the way up to Voyager, and even Enterprise, ALL took place within the SAME UNIVERSE, the same timeline.
Sure, there were time travel episodes, alternate-reality episodes, hallucinations, and all kinds of crazy crap, but in the end, the characters always remained within one single, shared time-line. And this happend, consistently, through what, FORTY YEARS?!
Then in one fell swoop Abrams comes in and COMPLETELY DESTROYS that universe, so that ALL of those stories NEVER HAPPENED. This is worse than the ending where the guy wakes up and it's all a dream!
Star Trek, as an independent movie standing alone, was overall a decent film. As a film, it certainly didn't suck. I am not going to nitpick it to death over little details about science this and casting that...
But I still hated it. Not because it was a bad movie (it wasn't). I hate it because it was a complete SLAP IN THE FACE to all the old Star Trek fans.
